Dr Tom Cooney

specialist registrar

About me

Originally from Ireland, Tom obtained his medical degree from University College Cork in 2015. After completing his internship in 2016 he moved to Australia where he spent a number of years working in the specialties of general medicine, intensive care, orthopaedics and emergency medicine as well as gaining experience working with sporting teams. Tom has also completed a Masters in Sports Medicine through the University of Queensland in 2020.

In 2022 Tom commenced his specialist training in Sport and Exercise Medicine and he is currently a second year registrar. He is the club doctor for the Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club in the A-League and Sydney University (Rugby) Football Club in the Shute Shield. He has worked as an assistant medical officer for the Melbourne Storm and has provided medical coverage for the Sydney 7s. He previously spent 2 years as the doctor for the Williamstown Football Club in the VFL.

He has a particular interest in rugby and soccer injuries, concussion management, acute and chronic sporting injuries and the use of exercise to treat and prevent chronic disease. He is experienced in performing ultrasound guided injections including platelet rich plasma, cortisone and hyaluronic acid.

Outside of work Tom loves to explore Sydney’s food scene, is a rugby fanatic and an avid but mediocre 5-a-side soccer player.

Tom is available for consultations on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and a GP referral is not required to see him.
